B.F.A.Graphic DesignMajor

Graphic Design class

The BFA in Graphic Design is a focused, pre-professional degree, leading to careers or graduate study in graphic design, and related fields. One of the goals for the program is for students to form their own visual vocabulary and to speak it with an artistic voice. The emphasis is on critical thinking and contemporary issues, combined with a strong understanding of formal design principles, and a fluency in multiple mediums. Graphic Design classes are taught in dedicated and well-equipped facilities and Graphic Design classes are taught in our comprehensive Media Lab. The graphic design faculty are practicing designers who are respected in their fields, with many professional experiences and valuable connections that can create opportunities for their students.

What You'll Learn

Students in Graphic Design share a set of basic courses that give them ways to generate ideas and to think about their work. Specific classes for the Graphic Design emphasis include courses in Communication Design, Typography, Motion Graphics and Interactive Media. These are complimented with a rich selection of studio art and art history electives, and general education courses. Throughout the curriculum, the concepts of art and design are interwoven with ideas from history, philosophy and other disciplines. Projects are developed through research, critique and collaboration, with an eye toward real world applications.

Students in the Graphic Design program are required to complete an internship where they work in a professional setting and are mentored by a working professional. Their internship placement is facilitated and monitored by WCU faculty members. The program is completed by a senior level portfolio class, which helps bring their work to a professional level, and present it in the best way possible.
