Mathematics Degree Programs

Ashlee Jones

Mathematics is the science of structure, order, and relation that has evolved from counting, measuring, and describing the shapes of objects. It deals with logical reasoning and quantitative calculation and is considered the underlying language of science.

The Department offers both a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed) depending on students’ goals. The B.S. degree prepares students for work in a variety of industries or for further study in a graduate or professional school. Our B.S. degree gives students a choice of five concentrations - Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Mathematics Educations or Traditional Mathematics. The B.S. Ed. degree prepares students for licensure to teach mathematics in secondary schools (grades 9-12).

Mathematics Concentrations

Applied Mathematics Concentration

This option prepares the student to use mathematics to solve problems in a wide range of fields. Students must complete a second major or minor with computer science, chemistry, and electrical engineering being common second fields.

Degree Requirements

Eight-Semester Plan for B.S. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics Concentration

CAA major pathway baccalaureate plans

Traditional Mathematics Concentration

This option allows the student to delve deeply into mathematics with the most extensive set of mathematics courses of any of the options. This strong foundation is then supplemented by a required second major or minor.

Eight-Semester Plan for B.S. in Mathematics, Traditional Mathematics Concentration

CAA MAJOR PATHWAY BACCALAUREATE PLANS

Mathematics Education Concentration

This option prepares a student to obtain a North Carolina teaching license and to teach mathematics in the North Carolina secondary schools. There is a serious shortage of secondary school mathematics teachers, so employment prospects are excellent.

Degree Requirements

(Starting on an even year) Eight-Semester Plan for B.S.Ed. in Mathematics Education

(Starting on an odd year) Eight-Semester Plan for B.S. in Mathematics Education

Actuarial Science Concentration

The actuarial science concentration includes courses that prepare students for professional examinations Exam P/1 and Exam FM/2. The concentration also includes coursework that meets learning objectives for Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) in Mathematical Statistics, Accounting and Finance, and Economics.

Degree Requirements

Eight-Semester Plan for B.S. in Mathematics, ACTUARIAL Concentration

CAA MAJOR PATHWAY BACCALAUREATE PLANS

Data Science Concentration

This option prepares students to use coursework in mathematics, computer science and statistics to solve problems using real-world data. The significant overlap with computer science makes this concentration an excellent selection for a student to double major in mathematics and computer science.
