Biographical Note

William Estes was from Swain County, North Carolina. He served as a judicial official as well as a lieutenant in the North Carolina militia during the Civil War. The Collection contains Estes' personal documents and correspondence from the period 1851-1923.

The papers include personal and/or business correspondence; papers related to Estes' capacity as a judicial official (court summons or court actions; warrants; notices of actions, petitions, and decisions; agreements); property and land related papers (notices, transactions, surveys, etc.); receipts and memorandum and account booklets; surveys and reports on stills and distilleries, road duty, or schools; promissory notes; Estes' commission as a 1st Lieutenant in the North Carolina militia (April 20, 1862); vouchers for clay hauled (1910); ephemeral printed items, books, business forms, and a photogaph.
