Health and Wellness

Health Services

Western Carolina uses a holistic approach to support student wellness and has a variety of facilities, programs and services in place to support a healthy and balanced lifestyle. The elements of wellness encompass the full student experience—from class activities to informal recreation, physical and psychological health to social development. Students are encouraged to think of wellness as a lifelong goal.

Health Services

Professional medical staff and licensed mental health providers serve the health needs of WCU students in accredited medical facilities. Our Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services departments are supported by the student health fee and are open to all students who are required to pay this fee. WCU students must have comprehensive medical insurance for those instances where healthcare services are provided outside of the campus Health Services. A student health plan, sponsored by the UNC system, is available for students that do not have other insurance coverage. Health Services also maintains a Campus EMS service to support students in the event of an emergency.

Counseling Services

College provides a unique set of challenges that can make for difficult situations. To help, WCU students can schedule one-on-one counseling sessions as well as participate in group counseling should they need extra support any time during their college career. Throughout the school year, a Counselor-on-Call is also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These services are available to students on a short-term basis at no cost. If, following the initial appointment, it is determined that a student's needs do not match the services available, or if longer-term counseling is recommended, the student will be referred to other resources.
