Get Active

The Western North Carolina region attracts active people that like to stay fit and have fun outdoors. That culture is also apparent on campus, where students have access to a variety of facilities, can join a team, visit the campus rec center, or rent equipment for outdoor adventures. Mix things up and try something new or just unwind with a hike or jog along our miles of campus trails.

Campus Rec Center

WCU’s Campus Recreation center offers group exercise classes, cardio machines and weight training, an indoor pool for open swims and water sports clinics, and a climbing wall. We are proud to host one of the most extensive climbing programs in the east and the TALLEST collegiate wall in North Carolina! The Base Camp climbing wall offers 2,100 square feet of climbing surface and is 50 feet tall. There are routes designed for the first-time climber as well as for the serious climber looking for a workout. In addition to rope climbing on the tall part of the wall, there also is a bouldering arch ideal for working on technique without the hassle of waiting for a belay.

Our indoor pool is used for various programs and activities, including Open Swim, Aqua Exercise, and Family Swim. Other groups use the pool for academic classes, kayak clinics, and swimming programs so be sure to check our pool hours for updates.

Club Sports

A club sport is a student organization that has been formed by students interested in participating in a favorite sport activity. WCU currently has 18 active clubs with about 400 participants. Some of the currently active club sports include:

  • Men's Baseball
  • Bass Fishing
  • Cycling
  • Equestrian
  • Women's Soccer
  • Men and Women's Rugby

Disc Golf

Catamount Links is WCU's 13-hole disc golf course. Students can check out discs at the Campus Recreation Center and play on their own or with friends. Or they may choose to participate in an Intramural Tournament or Club Sport Team.

Campus Recreation offers regular fitness programming including group exercise classes and personal training for the campus community.

intramural sports

Intramurals are free and only for WCU students, faculty and staff to compete against one another in flag football, ultimate Frisbee, humans vs. zombies, kickball, water polo, bubble soccer, tennis and volleyball to name a few. We offer over 40 different leagues, events and tournaments that bring together over 1,400 participants.

Outdoor programs

Our outdoor program, Base Camp Cullowhee, has helped WCU achieve notoriety as a top outdoor adventure school in the Southeast by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. Students can rent an array of equipment including camping gear, canoes, and mountain bikes right on campus, or sign up for group excursions like kayak rolling clinics, skydiving weekends, and cave tours. Whether you’re seeking an adrenaline-pumping experience or something a little less intense, you’ll find it through Base Camp.

The Ramsey Regional Athletic Center has racquetball courts available for use by students, faculty, and staff. Check out the hours of operation and reserve your court today!

Walking, biking, & hiking opportunities

WCU has multiple opportunities for walking, biking, and hiking right on campus. Our trail system has 6.8 miles of narrow trail designed for hiking and mountain biking. For those who desire less strenuous activity, Campus Recreation and Wellness has created a walking map of campus  with routes of varying distances.
