Substance Abuse Studies

Substance Abuse Courses: Western Carolina University offers four 15-week courses (or 9 week during the summer) that meet the substance abuse specific coursework requirements for licensure with the NCSAPPB. The courses are taught one afternoon/evening a week over a 10-15 week schedule at either the Asheville or Cullowhee campus on a rotating basis. Learn more...


Culturally Based Native Health Certificate (Non-Credit)

Western Carolina University offers four online courses culminating in a non-credit certificate in Native American Health. Each course has 4.5 CEUs and 45 contact hours. The courses are taught entirely online over the fall, summer and spring semesters. Students may take individual courses or complete the certificate program , which is comprised of 4 courses; two required courses and two electives. Learn more...


Past and Recurring Programs

Lumbar Motor Control – Australian Evidence Based Approach
This lab-intensive course focuses on key aspects of core motor control and balance for individuals with low back pain. Attendees will learn techniques for core muscle palpation, identification of muscle substitutions, and a process for identifying individuals who will best benefit from a core exercise program.


Cervical Motor Control and Cervicogenic Dizziness – Australian Evidence Based Approach
This lab-intensive course focuses on key aspects of core motor control and balance for individuals with neck pain. Attendees will learn techniques for scapular and cervical spinal muscle palpation and identification of muscle substitutions.


Medicare Alphabet Soup for Outpatient Rehabilitation Practices: Surviving and Thriving Under Rules and Regulations
This course will provide a clear understanding of the Medicare rules and regulations for outpatient physical and occupational therapy. Participants will also develop a basic understanding of the audit process and how to position oneself for success in an audit situation. This course will cover the more challenging scenarios therapists will face. New Evaluation codes effective in January of 2017 will also be presented.
