Judy House

Winston Salem, North Carolina
Mountain Dulcimer

Judy began her study of music at the age of 9 when she was introduced to the flute; piano soon followed. She has been playing and performing ever since with everything from marching bands to gospel quartets to dulcimer ensembles!

She received her first mountain dulcimer in 1995. A graduate of the first class for Teaching the Mountain Dulcimer from Dulcimer U at WCU, she has taught Mountain Dulcimer classes at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, NC since 2010, has a number of private students, and was added to the Dulcimer U staff in 2014 for the Teaching the Mountain Dulcimer core class. She has also been a presenter at dulcimer festivals across North Carolina for the past 3 years.

A graduate of Campbell University, Judy has had an extraordinary variety of opportunities as an educator over the past 40 years, teaching preschool through graduate level classes in North Carolina as well as planning and presenting staff development over much of the state.

Following many conversations concerning the need for more youth playing the dulcimer, she recently started a new project called Dulcimers in School with a close friend she first met at Dulcimer U years ago! This past November, they co-presented at the NCMEA Conference, encouraging music teachers across the state of NC to use dulcimers to teach their standards-based curriculum. They wrote a new book, Dulcimers in the Schools, which evolved out of this project, providing a teacher’s manual and student book giving teachers the tools they need to learn and teach this amazing instrument!

In addition to Judy’s morning core class, she will be offering several afternoon electives, most of which are geared toward teaching the dulcimer, but some will be beneficial to all mountain dulcimer players.
