Stewardship

Western Carolina University is surrounded by the dramatic topography of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. From select ornamental plantings and color beds, to native plantings and tree selection, the landscape on campus reflects and compliments the natural environment.

Through intentional planning, design and maintenance, landscape stewardship efforts at WCU help promote sustainability on campus while highlighting the unique beauty and biodiversity that defines this area.

When planning for sustainable landscapes, we consider:

  • Site conditions and building design

  • Plant selection

  • Practical turf areas

  • Efficient/limited landscape irrigation

  • Soil enhancement

  • Mulch use

  • Appropriate maintenance
