Loan Requirements

Please borrow wisely and only accept or apply for what you truly need in order to minimize your debt.

How do I apply for federal student loans?

By completing the FAFSA, you have already applied for federal loans. If you are eligible to receive any type of Federal Subsidized or Unsubsidized loan, it will be offered to you in your initial financial aid award, after you have been given all the grant money for which you are eligible. You can decide whether you would like to accept all, none or a portion of the loans that have been offered to you. You will need to complete Entrance Counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note if you have not done so in a previous year.

How do my parents apply for a Federal Direct PLUS Loan?

If there is room in your COA budget for a parent PLUS loan, it will be included in your original award offer. To apply for the PLUS loan, your parent will need to go to studentloans.gov to the “Complete PLUS Request Process” section.  They can apply for all, or a portion of the loan amount listed on your award. Please note that the PLUS loan is subject to credit approval. They will also have to “Sign Master Promissory Note” on the studentloans.gov website if they have not done so in a previous year.

How do I apply for a private loan?

Private Alternative Loans are loans for students who have exhausted or do not qualify for federal financial aid. A credit check will be required and terms and rates vary by lender and are based on the creditworthiness of the applicant and co-signer. Loan amounts cannot exceed  cost of attendance.  While we work with any lending institution, here is a list of preferred lenders.

How do I apply for a Perkins Loan?

By completing the FAFSA, you have already applied for all federal loans for which you are eligible. If you are awarded a Perkins Loan you must complete a separate Entrance Counseling. The required Master Promissory Note will be mailed to you for completion.
