Transfer Pathways

Credits earned from a regionally accredited institution may be approved as credits toward a degree at Western Carolina University.

One semester of college work

Those who are interested in transferring after one semester of college work must fulfill all Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) from high school and should register for three college credit hours each in English, Math, Science, Social Science and/or Foreign Language.

For admission, those under the age of 21 should submit the high school transcript and standardized test scores in addition to the official college transcript unless otherwise noted in the student's MyWCU portal after application completion.

Two semesters of college work

Those who are interested in transferring after two semesters of college work should have six credit hours each in English, Math, Science, Social Science and/or Foreign Language.

For admission, those under the age of 21 should submit the high school transcript and standardized test scores in addition to the official college transcript IF less than 24 credit hours is earned. If 24 hours of college credit are earned by completing six credits in each subject listed above, the high school transcript and standardized test scores may be waived.

Three to Four semesters of college work

Students are encouraged to complete an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree. Completion of one of these degrees from a properly accredited institution, including all North Carolina Community Colleges, may transfer into WCU waiving the Liberal Studies requirement and awards the students junior status. Please note that course grades, credit earned through other sources, and the accreditation of the institution(s) attended can affect the transferability of courses and class standing. Contact your transfer counselor/advisor at your community college for more information on this block of work.

For admission, students should submit an official transcript from each college attended. The high school transcript and standardized test scores are not required if an AA or AS degree is earned.

Students who are over the age of 21, regardless of number of college credits completed, do NOT need to submit a high school transcript or standardized test scores.
