Research conducted at Western Carolina University is subject to a wide range of federal and state policies established to ensure ethical conduct. It is the responsibility of the Research Compliance Officer to facilitate and monitor university-wide compliance with these regulations and policies as well as advocating for the protection of our faculty engaging in research and mitigating conflict of interest. Additionally, there are a number of institutional and UNC System policies governing research and related activities about which all who engage in externally sponsored grants and contracts must be informed. One such federal policy of critical importance to principle investigators, their institutions, auditors and grant sponsors is Time and Effort - click on this link to read more about how this directly impacts you and how to calculate yours.
Part of our mission is the promotion of research excellence across the institution. This will be accomplished through producing high quality proposals and through the creation and implementation of targeted Responsible Conduct of Research education programs. These programs have been developed to address the needs of those just entering the world of research, like graduate students, to our most seasoned investigators. In addition, our programs address a wide variety of research issues and regulatory requirements, spanning social science research to the health and natural sciences and everything in between.
Through the work being conducted with the Institutional Review Board (IRB), the Research Compliance Officer ensures respect, fairness and safety in human subjects’ research. Likewise, oversight for the humane care and use of animals used in research and teaching is achieved through coordination of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
The Research Compliance Officer works with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) overseeing biohazardous agents and Recombinant DNA used in research and monitoring safety concerns involving chemicals and radiation. The Research Compliance Officer also coordinates the management and oversight of Export Control regulations.
