The Tuckasegee Valley Historical Review

Founded in 1992, the Tuckasegee Valley Historical Review is a peer-reviewed journal published by the history graduate students of Western Carolina University. It is our mission to publish the best work that MA students in the Southeast have to offer, while simultaneously giving graduate students quality experience in academic publishing.

Published annually by the graduate students of Western Carolina University, the TVHR exists to give graduate students the opportunity to publish their outstanding work and to gain professional experience in all facets of academic publication while simultaneously maintaining standards of the utmost quality. We consider essays, book reviews, and exhibition reviews for publication from students who are currently pursing an MA in history at a university in the Southeastern United States. The purpose and mission of the TVHR is very unique: we are only journal in the United States (and perhaps the world) that caters exclusively to MA history students. At this critical stage of our academic development, the TVHR will help prepare students for their academic careers. Whether you plan to teach, work in a museum, or enroll in a PhD program, you will find our process helpful. In short, we take the mystery out of academic publication through our hands-on publication process.

After you submit to us, you will learn:

  •  How to write a peer-review
  •  How to use a peer-review to strengthen your own work
  • How to turn your term paper into an article
  • How the editorial process works from beginning to end
  • How to read your peer's work critically
  • How to, in the future, select a journal that's right

We hope that through this process, we can help prepare students for long and fruitful careers in the world of academia.
