About Robert Steffen:

 

Robert Steffen, Ph.D., PE  joined the Construction Management department at Western Carolina University in January, 2011 upon 10 years of engineering design, testing, management, and consulting work for companies including General Dynamics (San Jose, CA), Wagners Concrete (Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia), Sutton-Kennerly and Associates (Asheville, NC) , W.P. Hickman Company (Asheville, NC),  Kreysler and Associates (American Canyon, CA), and GeoSyntec Consultants (Atlanta, GA).

Over the last 15 years, Dr. Steffen has designed and managed the construction of components and structures comprised of steel, timber, concrete, masonry, aluminum, and FRP materials. He is a licensed professional civil engineer in multiple states including NC, CA, and FL.  Upon graduate work at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Steffen worked as an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of New Hampshire from 1998-2002, where he performed full-scale structural engineering research and co-designed the Rollins road bridge, the first concrete bridge in the United States to be entirely reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymeric grid material. His current research interests include the design, testing, and performance of fiber reinforced polymeric (FRP) composite materials in highway and commercial building structures, acoustic measurement systems for construction, finite element analysis, and renewable energy systems.
