General surgeon James Holleman, was born and raised in Raleigh, NC.  He attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh and attained a BS degree in Zoology.  He received his MD at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and completed his general surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.  Following training he worked in an underserved area in the North Carolina Mountains for five years.

Dr. Holleman initially became interested in complementary and alternative medicine upon reading Dr. Andrew Weil’s Spontaneous Healing and Deepak Chopra’s Perfect Health during residency in an attempt to deal with the obvious demands of general surgery residency in a productive manner.  After practicing yoga and meditation during this time he began to realize that there must be more to medicine than just dealing with the long term consequences of questionable choices and that prevention and taking care of the whole person was of paramount importance.  After several years in private practice, he finally decided to pursue further formal education in these approaches and was accepted into the Arizona Fellowship.

Dr. Holleman.is currently chief medical officer and chief of anesthesia for St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus, NC. . He has practiced at Holleman Surgical in Polk County since November of 2002. Dr. Holleman continues to practice surgery and incorporates integrative care into his practice when it is safe and practical to provide the best overall care to the whole person. He currently lives in the mountains of western North Carolina where he enjoys hiking, yoga, Tai Chi, and attempts to achieve some success with bonsai cultivation, raising koi and Japanese ink painting. Dr. Holleman is a 2010 Fellow of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.
