Ian Hewer completed his anesthesia training in 1995 at the University of California, San Francisco. During his career, he has worked at both tertiary medical centers and small community hospitals, providing anesthesia care to a diverse surgical population- including pediatrics, obstetrics, neurosurgical and cardiac patients. Currently, he is employed part-time as an Assistant Professor at Western Carolina University (WCU) in Candler, North Carolina, and provides anesthesia services for Asheville Anesthesia Associates at Mission Hospital, in Asheville, North Carolina.
He has extensive clinical teaching experience both as a preceptor and clinical coordinator, working with graduate students from the University of Kansas, Duke University, and WCU. In 2010, he began work on his PhD at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. His dissertation will focus on the economics of anesthesia care delivery.
Previously, he has published in AANA Journal & Nursing Economics, and is a Fellow of the AANA Journal Writing Fellowship Program Writing for Scientific Publication. Mr. Hewer is a member of American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, North Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists, International Anesthesia Research Society, Academy Health. He has also served on the Publications Committee of the Kansas Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and as the student representative for the Board of the California Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Mr. Hewer is married with two children, and lives in Asheville, North Carolina. Outside of anesthesia, his interests include soccer, biking and music.
