What is a QEP?
QEP stands for the Quality Enhancement Plan that is a requirement for Western Carolina University’s reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The plan must focus on enhancing student learning and must involve significant segments of the campus. WCU will be monitored regularly to see how well our plan is working, in five years (2012) and then in ten years (2017). SACS will examine the WCU QEP to determine if the university is making good progress on the plan.
What is WCU’s QEP?
“Synthesis: A Pathway to Intentional Learning at WCU.” Our plan is committed to enhancing student learning especially as it relates to students synthesizing their university experiences. The plan will guide undergraduates as they develop personal learning and career goals and mentor them throughout their time at WCU as they reflect on how their academic and co-curricular experiences contribute to their goals after graduation.
How is the RT Program Involved in WCU’S QEP?
The Recreational Therapy B.S. Degree Program was one of the first four academic programs on campus to pilot this new QEP. Since the focus is on quality education, recreational therapy’s involvement in the QEP helps assure that our majors are receiving one of the highest quality educational programs on campus and of all the recreational therapy programs in the U.S.
As a student majoring in recreational therapy, you are a major player in your educational program. The more intentional you are in your learning and the more engaged you are in service learning and co-curricular opportunities, the more personal benefits you will gain from your education. The more benefits you and your fellow students gain, the more the recreational therapy program will grow and develop as a high quality learning community.
Quality education does not just happen. It is intentional and deliberate. You are engaged on a journey of learning and personal development from the creation of your first strategic plan for your major through the completion of your competency assessments at the beginning of your studies to the one at the end of your senior clinical internship. You will experience your own growth and have the opportunity to intentionally shape your own path. Your faculty advisors are hear to help guide you on this journey to assure that you receive the best education possible in recreational therapy.
