General Art / Art History

General, broad-based studies in art and art history culminate in a BA degree which required 120 hours to complete. Students gain a foundation in both hands-on studio art and art history. Building on this foundation, students select a variety of upper-level elective courses, focusing on their own areas of interest.

Artistic issues of the past and present are considered in both studio and art history courses as part of the process of developing critical thinking. An examination of the art of other cultures and periods expands a conscious artistic compass. The ability to describe, analyze and read works of art in different and contradictory directions is a crucial element in understanding art movements.

Students in this program are required to study at least one foreign language and are encouraged to study abroad.

Students may choose to earn the BA as a stand-alone degree or build on it for a more intense involvement in art. All entering studio art majors are placed in the BA program automatically. Those who wish to be considered for the BFA in either Studio Art or Graphic Design are required to participate in a portfolio review during their first or second semester at WCU.
