Bob Carton is an associate professor of entrepreneurship at Western Carolina University and the department head for Entrepreneurship, Sales & Marketing and Hospitality & Tourism. His research interests include organizational performance measurement and entrepreneurship. Just prior to returning to academia, Bob was a financial consultant specializing in providing services to companies that need a chief financial officer, but who cannot justify employing one full time. In this capacity, Bob advised his clients on a full range of financial topics including raising capital, business valuations both for acquisitions and for pricing financing deals, reporting and control systems, strategic partnerships, human resources issues, risk management, and strategic planning.
Bob started his career as a CPA. Subsequently, Bob was the chief financial and administrative officer of four different entrepreneurial businesses. These included a publicly traded mortgage-banking firm, two venture capital-backed technology companies, and computer software, hardware and leasing company. Bob also founded and managed a successful intrapreneurial venture while assistant controller for one of the largest engineering firms in the United States.
In his capacity as CFO, Bob has raised capital from numerous sources including public offerings, venture capital, private placements with institutional investors, private placements with angel investors, government development authority bond issues, cooperative research and development agreements, banks, insurance companies, and asset-based lenders. As part of the top management team, Bob negotiated for the purchase of several companies and for the sale of three of the companies for which he worked.
As a chief administrative officer, Bob has negotiated and administered in excess of $100,000,000 of public and private hazardous waste cleanup services contracts; origination and sale of $300,000,000 of residential mortgages; managed production and distribution operations; established and managed purchasing functions; managed human resources functions including health care and retirement plans, EEO reporting, NLRB cases, periodic performance review and tracking, MBO plans, stock options, and restricted stock plans; and established and managed risk management programs covering all perils.
Bob received a BS in Management Science and Accounting from DukeUniversity, and an MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. He has taught seminars and university classes in new venture finance, entrepreneurship, strategic management, cash management, general management, and non-profit financial management at five separate universities and for the United Way.
