May 1 for Summer Semester

It is important that you complete the Alternative Licensure application process as early as possible. Given the current volume of applications, course availability may be limited if you apply after the posted deadline. We make every effort to enroll qualified applicants, especially lateral entry teachers, even if the deadline has passed.
Step One - Choose A Program
Check out our Alternative Licensure Programs to see which program is right for you. You may also want to check out alternative licensure tuition and fees for information about the costs of the program and financial aid opportunities. Out of state applicants need to visit WCU's Applicants Outside NC webpage to determine eligibility for online programs.
Please know that at any time you may be asked to provide additional information regarding your candidacy for an alternative licensure program at WCU. If requested, this additional information will be used to assist in the decision-making for approval of any licensure only program plan. This may include, but is not limited to, the following items:
- Statement of Purpose (Aspirations for Teaching)
- Letters and contact information of professional references
- Campus interview
- Criminal background check
- M5-120 Personality Scale
- Educator's Professional Beliefs About Diversity Scale
Please be prepared to provide this information if requested in order to expedite the development of your program plan.
Prospective Secondary English students are required to submit a writing sample and a Statement of Purpose with their transcript. The writing sample should be eight full double-spaced pages or more in length; it should employ MLA documentation and use appropriate secondary sources; and it should demonstrate the applicant's ability to analyze literature and construct a clear argument. It will be evaluated on the basis of content, rigor, depth, and style. The Statement of Purpose (250-500 words) should explain why the applicant wishes to enter the professional field of teaching and how their experiences since graduating from college will contribute to their teaching career.
Step Two - Receive Program Approval & Official Personalized Plan of Study
Complete the Eligibility/Pre-Evaluation Form online and submit one official copy of transcripts. You will receive a confirmation e-mail that we have received your eligibility/pre-evaluation form within 1-2 business days. A program adviser will develop a plan of study that will satisfy licensure/MAT requirements. The initial review process may take up to 3-4 weeks to complete.
Step Three - Apply to WCU
Apply to Western Carolina University. Along with your official personalized plan of study, you will receive instructions on how to apply to the university. Note: Application to the WCU Graduate School will require a second official transcript for admission.
Step Four - Sign & Return Plan of Study
Complete the application process by returning the signed plan of study to the Office of Alternative Licensure at the address below.
