“I’m very pleased for the profession that Western is working with school systems to offer support for young teachers. Retention of good educators is more vital than recruiting them.”

FACULTY/STAFF DIRECTORY

For School Executives

Leaders in the Local Education Authorities in Western North Carolina have identified the need for school leaders, in addition to mentors, to support and nurture beginning teachers.

  • Good mentors are needed to teach assistant principals and new principals about beginning teacher support
  • Networking and communicating with other principals and assistant principals is vital
  • The key role for both principals and assistant principals should be beginning teacher support and retention of teachers.

Surveys conducted by the Center for the Support of Beginning Teachers suggest that assistant principals are often charged with administrative leadership for supporting beginning teachers, but with little or no training.

Professional development for school leaders in the area of teacher induction support is integrated into the work of the Center as a means of addressing the need for building level leadership that increases teacher retention.

Online resources, articles, and websites designed to offer school executives strategies to support both new and career teachers have been selected.
