Becoming a teacher is one of the highest callings in life. As one veteran teacher put it: “Without teachers we would have no other professions.” WCU offers undergraduate teacher education programs and graduate education programs, including a doctorate in educational leadership.
Although Western Carolina University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the university holds accreditation/membership in more than 50 other state and national associations. In fact, one member of the SACS accreditation team said our motto should be: "Excellence with a personal touch!" In addition, our college is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Each year, approximately 3,200 students enroll in our undergraduate and graduate classes, and each year many of these students earn degrees in teaching. Western’s rate of teacher placement is one of the best in the state.
Our teachers-in-training stay ahead of the technology curve. The Instructional Technology Center in the Killian building serves as the focal point for the teacher-education technology initiative, offering student computing facilities, multimedia development, hardware, and software.
Our Teacher Education Program also serves as a resource for the region. Teachers at Western take advantage of several support and outreach centers.
