Liberal Studies Wellness Courses

The Wellness Core (C4) Liberal Studies courses within the Health & Physical Education Program provide students with a multidimensional set of knowledge and skills to enjoy a high quality of life with positive health outcomes throughout their college career and beyond.

The two courses offered by the HPE Program, Health 111: Stress Management and Health 123: Health & Wellness, cover the multiple dimensions of wellness as a full integration of overall health. Students evaluate credibility of health information developing their personal information literacy for health topics through short papers, reflection journals, and/or small group discussion in class. Students participate in personal health assessments and complete a personal behavior change project based on their findings. Some of the health assessments include pre and post fitness testing, personal wellness inventories, time management and nutritional analyses.  The courses include an integrated physical activity component that counts for a percentage of the overall grade for the course. The activity component may include yoga, group exercise, walking/jogging, cardio exercise, strength training, disc sports, circuit training, team sports, cooperative games, aqua fitness, dance, and outdoor pursuits.

These courses are offered every semester and during summer school.  Course formats include face to face instruction, hybrid, residential online and distance online offerings.  The instructors who teach these courses are knowledgeable, dedicated professionals who have backgrounds in health education, public health, exercise science, health promotion, and physical education.

-I have learned a lot about how to take care of my body and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. We engage in physical activities that I like because I am an active person.

-My favorite aspect of this course is the 6 dimension approach to wellness. From the first day that the instructor spoke of the different dimensions of wellness, we have done many different units regarding different aspects of wellness, but they are always tied into each other and the concept of wellness as a whole. Additionally, the 5k training and behavior change projects are great. They promote goal-setting, self-confidence, and taking an active role in improving one's own health.
