Research Interest: Marital and family development across the lifespan, family functioning models


Originally from Joplin, Missouri, Dr. Brotherton earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology at Missouri Southern State College. He earned his Master's degree and Certificate of Advanced Study in Counseling at Western Carolina University. His Doctorate is in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University. He joined the faculty at Western Carolina in the fall of 1993.

Dr. Brotherton has five years of public school teaching experience and was assistant professor in counselor education at Montana State University for four years before coming to Western Carolina. His national professional memberships include the American Counseling Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors, and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. At the state level, he is a member of the North Carolina Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the North Carolina School Counselors Association, the North Carolina Specialists in Group Work, and the North Carolina Family Based Services Association.
