Research Software Support

Service Description

Western Carolina University provides five statistics software packages.

SAS – Quantitative Analysis
SPSS – Quantitative Analysis
STATA – Quantitative Analysis
ATLAS.ti – Qualitative Analysis
NVivo – Qualitative Analysis

Requirements/Limitations

The five software packages only run on Windows Vista or higher. Sufficient hard drive space is required (40-60GB minimum) especially for the SAS software.

SAS – Can be installed on personal and University computers to be used on-or off-campus.

SPSS – Can be installed only on University computers on or off campus. There are 100 licenses that are used concurrently on campus, and when a faculty member wishes to use the software off-campus they can check out a commuter license for up to 7 days.

STATA –Can be installed only on University owned computers. There are 15 licenses that are used concurrently on campus.

ATLAS.ti – Can be installed only on University computer to be used on campus only. There are five licenses that are used concurrently.

NVivo – Can be installed only on University computer. There are five perpetual licenses with two year support (support expires in Spring 2016).


Eligibility

The use of the statistics software again is dependent on the contracts.

SAS

  • Can be installed for faculty on both their WCU computer and their privately owned computer
  • Can be installed for staff on their WCU computer
  • Student may access SAS in the Open Access Student Labs

SPSS

  • Can be installed on any WCU owned computer to be used concurrently
  • Students can access the SPSS in the Open Access Student Labs

STATA

  • Can be installed on any WCU owned computer to be used concurrently

ATLAS.ti

  • Can be installed on any WCU owned computer to be used concurrently

NVivo

  • Can be installed on any WCU owned computer to be used concurrently.

Service Availability

SPSS – This software is available on-campus at any time. Off-campus customers must check out a commuter license to use the software for up to seven (7) days at a time. Customers must then return to campus to check out the commuter license again.  Additionally, SPSS can be accessed via the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The Biltmore Park Instructional Site has licenses available for faculty to use at those facilities.

STATA –This software is available on or off campus.

SAS – This software is installed locally on each computer and will be available on demand.

ATLAS.ti – This software is available on campus only any time.

NVivo – This software is available on or off campus.

IT’s Role

IT will install software on any faculty or staff computer upon request and adequate computer resources.  IT will install the software in the labs and/or e-classrooms upon request.

Faculty and staff may get assistance from the Office of Research Administration in the basic use of the software. The Research Development Specialist works with faculty and staff to support, facilitate and enhance internal and external research across the Boyer Model of Scholarship

  • Consults with faculty on an individual and/or groups basis regarding appropriate research design, methods, and evaluation for faculty scholarship and proposal development.
  • Provides training and assistance for qualitative and quantitative research projects
  • Assists faculty in the use of research software such as SPSS, SAS, R,  Atlas.ti, NVivo, ArcGIS and others
  • Facilitates opportunities for collaborative and peer-to-peer research support
  • Works with other campus stakeholders to develop policies, applications, and professional development opportunities to support research

Undergraduate students must get statistical assistance from their faculty member(s).
