GIS Support

Service Description

Western Carolina University provides access to the following ESRI software packages:

  • ArcView 
  • ArcEditor 
  • ArcInfo 
  • ArcPad 
  • ArcEditor Student Demo (Student Use Only)

Through the UNC contract, WCU is licensed for the following extensions:

  • 3D Analyst
  • Geostatistical Analyst
  • Maplex
  • ArcGIS Network Analyst
  • Publisher
  • Spatial Analyst
  • Tracking Analyst
  • ArcScan

Also through our UNC contract, WCU has free access to many of the online training modules for the ESRI software.

Requirements/Limitations

The computer in which the software is installed must be running Windows Vista or higher and must have a minimum of 2.5GB of free space to install the software. It is highly recommended that there be sufficient hard drive space to run the software as well as at least 2GB processor and 2GB Ram. This software is a resource hog. If the host computer is a Macintosh, the space allotted to Bootcamp must be a minimum of 40GB for the Bootcamp (Windows) partition.

The ArcEditor Student Demo version is good for 365 days from the date of installation. It comes with the extensions listed above and also must run on a Windows  Vista or higher computer.

Eligibility

Faculty and staff may have any level except the Student Demo installed on their WCU computer running Windows Vista or higher or their privately owned computer running Windows Vista or higher.

Students may install the Student Demo version on their private computer that runs the Windows Vista or higher operating system.

Service Availability

This software is installed locally on computers. Subsequently, it is available at all times.

IT’s Role

IT will install the software on any faculty or staff computer upon request and adequate computer resources. IT will install the software in the labs and e-classrooms upon request.

Support

If faculty or staff need assistance with an error running the GIS software, they can contact the IT Help Desk. Faculty and staff may receive some basic training on getting started with the GIS software through the Coulter Faculty Commons.
