Agency Description:

Project Challenge works with court-involved youth ages 8-17 in 33 counties and on the Qualla Boundary with the Eastern Band of the Cherokee. The program engages youth in meaningful community service activities. The activities fulfill their commitment to court while helping them understand that they are capable and how needed and wanted they are by those in their community. The underlying purpose is to help the youth understand what it is like to be a giving person, to help them touch, see and feel what it is like to give.

In the western counties Project Challenge works as one part of a team within the Juvenile Justice Treatment Continuum (JJTC). JJTC is a collaborative effort that combines three agencies: the NC Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Meridian Behavioral Health and Project Challenge. These teams surround the youth and their families with a continuum of services to help them successfully complete judicial supervision.

Training:    Volunteers receive instruction on program philosophy, life skills and guidelines for working with this population. Volunteers are always accompanied by staff throughout their time with Project Challenge.

Time Commitment:    Minimum of 20 hours.

Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements:    Developing relationships with these youth is key. A willingness to share and model positive behaviors and be a part of a team.
Volunteer Involvement:    Volunteers will work directly with the youth doing a variety of community service activities.
