Agency Description:   The Healing Place is the Rape Crisis Center of Henderson County. Our mission is to provide specialized services to help men, women, and children recover from sexual violence. Services include a 24-hour hotline, crisis intervention, hospital accompaniment, support when interacting with law enforcement,  court support, therapy, and case management. All services are free and confidential. Services are provided in English and Spanish.

Training:   On-Call Advocates are required to attend training that will prepare them to support a victim in crisis. Training includes crisis intervention skills, listening skills, information about the medical exam, information about the judicial system and court support, protection orders and other legal remedies, and information on local resources. The training lasts approximately 20 hours and must be completed in its entirety.

Time Commitment:   On-Call Advocates are needed immediately. Day coverage is from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Night coverage is from 5:00 pm to 8:30 am. Weekends are generally taken as a block and begin at 5:00 pm on Friday and end at 8:30 am when the office reopens. The office phones are rolled to the volunteer’s preferred phone so there is no need to come to the office to pick up the agency phone unless the volunteer doesn’t have a reliable phone they can carry at all times during their shift. The volunteer must be available at all times during their shift to take calls and respond to Pardee Hospital and Park Ridge Health. The phone CANNOT be answered by an answering machine or voice mail.

Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements:   On-Call Volunteers must be 18 years of age. The volunteer must have transportation to get to and from the hospitals if needed. They must complete a volunteer application, provide personal references, and submit to a background check. They must be compassionate, confidential, and able to maintain professional boundaries. They must be able to work with a diverse group of individuals and be willing to provide support regardless of their personal opinions or biases. Spanish speaking volunteers are especially needed.
Volunteer Involvement:   Education Volunteer: Volunteers will provide emotional support, information, and referrals to victims of all ages.
